30s Love Cafe: Night

In Los Angeles, I have yet to find a place where my friends and I can drink warm drinks in comfortable chairs with good music playing and the ruckus of other conversations doesn’t overwhelm.  Other people vibing is a good thing but the acoustical clash of voices, concrete floors and wooden tables… let’s get some egg crates strategically placed in the rafters.

Play us some John Legend, Jennifer Johns, Jill Scott, Goapele.  Who are your favorites?

Drink tea, drink coffee, get your cognac– it’s all good.  Order up your favorite comfort foods with rotating host countries in our dining area to show you how the natives do it across the world.

The men are fly, the women radiate warmth and you never know when a talented diamond in the not-so-rough will take the mic and blow your mind.  (Artists submit audition by video ahead of time, applause is measured in cybercipher first… we’ve all been there for the spoken word that was just this side of wack, right?)

It’s a communal vibe where genuine “How you doin’” nods come naturally but those who want to be left alone can be in peace.

Artists from around the world create this gallery with their pieces for sale on the walls, their music on audio display, their fashion available for purchase.

Meander on back to the dance floor off to the side of the cafe where inside the DJ’s are spinning but all you hear in the cafe is a distant thump of the bass tempting you to see what’s what.

Technology is invisible but alive in the cafe outpacing all but the savviest of innovation heads.

Why do the people come?

  • To lounge.  Relax, imbibe, read, play cards, get lost in your laptop.  We don’t define it, you just do it.
  • To hook up.  It’s the thinking person’s meat market, ain’t nothing wrong with finding new love or new friends.
  • To party.  Celebrating milestones, birthdays, whatever.  You get the energy of being at the club without the impossibility of conversation or the too many bodies per square foot.
  • To be inspired.  The visual stimuli alone is enough to get you writing, rhyming, thinking.  Different flavors of folks and art in every space.

Who are the people?  These categories aren’t to say that styles don’t intermingle, they’re really one in the same, just on different nights.  All are fashionistas without even tryin’.  You’ve got:

  • The after work crowd.  Buttoned up, understated sexy.
  • The natural set.  Twists and dreads looking like the 2007 version of earthy.
  • Hip-hop by night.   Entrepreneur by day.  (The positive kind!)

Does this sound like the kind of place you’ve been looking for?  What am I missing?  What are your questions?  The spot is in the works now, stay posted.
